g funding for their studies. The government funds many of those studies and they also fund the various universities and so on that fund studies. The hospitals are also heavily dependent upon government money and getting on the wrong side of government bureaucrats can cause them very big problems.
The government is the elephant in the room. They have the money and the power of making laws, rules and regulations and of enforcing those laws, rules and regulations. They also hire tons of people and the lure of those lucrative jobs can have a big influence on people when they know that if they tick off some of those government heavyweights (eg. Fauci et al) their careers and career prospects can be negatively impacted... sometimes massively so.
When they throw their weight around, people pay attention. One may hope that people just independently stand up for what they believe is right regardless of the pressure, but the fact of the matter is that most people have learned that it is not only much easier, but much better for them in so many ways if they just go along to get along.
Look at the studies in the US where researchers had subjects that would do virtually anything they said, including putting fellow research subjects in pain and at great physical risk, up to and including death.
