He owned the bank not a employee at all he is the only shareholder.... he found the money in a paper handed to him by a incompetent buffoon in a act of stupidity. He had no idea what the money was for. He did not steal the money. Jeez the FOOL Gave it to him of his own free will.
You can argue he morally should of returned the money to Billy Baily. But Legal in that era most states had no laws on found money and clearly the money was not found it was handed to him in a gesture of arrogance.
It clearly could be seen as a gift to Mister Potter on Christmas Eve.
