Was he? What law did he break? Billy Baily was a drunken buffoon who lost money out of arrogance and pride. Not to mention is incompetence.
I love it's a wonderful life and watch it every year. Have the Steel Book Blue ray version. And while the narrative makes Potter out to be a evil vile man. In reality he is just doing the correct and proper things in the world of Finance, to make a profit and provide a vital service.
In reality the Baily Building and Loan was a financial disaster. The B&L had financial shareholders and it's pretty clear they where not getting their proper returns on their investments and that the B&L was making improper loans based on emotions as opposed to actual financial income and data. It was ran like a charity as opposed to a legit business.
If they where making proper loans to legit receivers of those loans then their Profit Margin's should of been large enough to have a stock pile of cash to cover a simple banking error, plus pay George Baily a very fat wage and have money to spare to pay the Shareholders their due.
But clearly the B&L was making bad loads, not charging enough interest and was stealing money From the investors by not giving them proper returns on those investments.
Plus George Baily was a idiot for not investing in Sam Wainwrights business.... How dumb are the Baily's???
And good gosh I hate to agree with Pickle but on this analysis he is not off base.
It happened on 5th Avenue is a much better Christmas Movie. It's about a Vet who meets a Hobo(bum) who travels seasonally between the mansions of the 2nd riches man on earth and lives there while he is away. The GI thinks he is Mike O'Connor the 2nd Richest guy and goes to the Mansion to live with him. Then some series of events happen that are heart warming but in the end it's about hard work and playing the system right and getting ahead.
