I wrote on this last year, but in short, I really believe that football staffs (or maybe the AD) is going to need to hire a GM type position similar to what we see in professional football. A department whose entire focus is on talent evaluation, negotiation, and making the most effective use of dollars allocated to NIL/Player Payment. This is also referenced in the article.
We're already asking way too much of College Football head coaches that they can reasonably get to with any type of effectiveness. It's also unlikely that the best game day coach is also the best talent evaluator and recruiter. We need to divide and conquer these competing skillsets and priorities in my opinion. I think the first organizations who can figure this out and "Money Ball" this situation is going to put themselves miles ahead of the game.
Closer to home, this really impacts Kansas. I don't know what they do. The 75-15-5-5 model referenced in the article seems very reasonable but will not work at Kansas. I believe Kansas will be able to fully fund the $20.5M traunch of revenue share, but this will test their limits. Which ultimately leaves football with a smaller portion that the normal $15.4M other fully funded football programs will have. When this happens, who is going to coach there with those limitations? Ultimately, Kansas is going to have to pick if they go all in as a basketball school (and risk being diminished nationally) or accept more mediocrity in basketball? I think they have to accept the latter, which will be fun to watch Bill Self deal w/ that.
This is all really unfortunate and the big revenue programs just keep getting bigger. The sport was becoming more competitive, but it looks like it could be reversing again. It would take a lot to kill college football but the courts and the NCAA are sure doing their best!
