for the far western territories. Independence, Westport and St. Joe were far more important to westward expansion than Kansas City. KC only began to grow significantly after the War Between the States and 25 years after the first wagon trains had set out for California. Most travelers had to cross the Mississippi River first and that occurred at St. Louis or at Hannibal.
