St Louis is much older than the Santa Fe trails; in fact it's older than the country. When Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory, St Louis was already 40 years old, and it was the natural starting point to then expand and explore westward.
Thomas Jefferson completed the Louisiana Purchase, which more than doubled the land in the United States. St. Louis was the capital of the territory, and was once considered a potential new capital for the U.S. with it being centrally located, entirely surrounded by water, and riddled with hills. KC was founded by a St. Louisan btw. This argument is as dumb as sporting KC calling themselves the soccer capital of America. Forever the insecure little sibling.

The only gateway kansas is known for was being a pitstop on the way to Denver.
