Other than home prices, San Diego is really not that much

But an 1800 square foot home in a Midwest city going for $350K is easily $1million there. If you don't have the equity from owning it in the family, good luck.
Oh and most have built second homes to rent "in their backyards" so you basically have 1/8 acre lots instead of 1/4" and screwy parking/access to many
It is nice weather but I can visit when I am tired of 4 seasons.
As for the homeless you need to get out more, they are everywhere and aggressive. They do move them from time to time but they are still everywhere. Not sure how you missed them
