In some respects, but at least the MU academics have found out the hard way that when the football team flounders, enrollment drops... and when the team is doing well, enrollment jumps.

They may consider it a necessary evil, or just a means to an end, but I think they want a thriving athletic department with teams that bring them huge amounts of publicity and good will.
