The United States of America is a country. One country. Singular. Cerftainly made up of the various states. These United States of America is appropriate. But it is still one county just as the Darden Restaurant group is one group made up of many restaurants. The SEC is one conference made up of many teams. Each have a say in what happens. But each is a singular entity. Yes, you can argue that since it is an agreement between the states you can only call it a "they". But that is the hair splitting that fosters the notion such types are spending a great deal of time in their parent's basement. And you are free to have at it.
