Tradition in scheduling was very unbalanced and inconsistent, with teams sometimes going many years without playing each other.
But, a consistent rotation is the most logical way to go.
With an eight game schedule, most people believe in the 1+7
But an alternative that I have not seen anyone suggest is a 2/3+6
In this scenario, the 16 teams across the league are broken up into four groups of regional rivalries of four teams.
Outside of your group of four, there are 12 teams remaining that you split in half six and six, and you play each group of six on an alternating basis. You play all of those other teams twice out of every four seasons.
Within your group of four, you play two of the other three schools on a rotating basis, so that you end up playing those teams twice out of every three seasons.
I believe in an eight game conference schedule where you are required to play one other P3.5 team each year (or 3 every 2 years) and games against FCS opponents are banned.
