One can hole views 1 and 2, and still be great people to others.
I don't believe I said anything that implied otherwise. If so, it was inadvertent. People holding worldviews #1 & #2 can be and usually are nice to others. In general. Sometimes extremely kind to others.
In reality, though, I think that is often a remnant of growing up with a religious background of one's family &/or the influence of a religious culture in the community in which they are living. I remember someone likening it to a car or motorcycle that is out of gas but is still running on fumes.
(moreso 1, as 2 implies you must beat someone else).
I don't think that is necessarily the case. I know people with large families that are very kind. Of course, if we take the analogy to the animal kingdom, if everyone had that same mindset and populations were rapidly growing, that would start causing conflicts. People would eventually be faced with competing for scarce resources, whether that is land, food, water or whatever.
But the same is true of #1 as well if people really take it to heart to the exclusion of the others, especially category 3. If the only thing you care about is maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain/discomfort you will tend towards selfishness. If everyone has that mindset things can get pretty darn ugly.
Interesting that people being hostile to your beliefs is what seemed to solidify your belief
I may not have expressed myself all that well, but what I meant was that having my ideas challenged made me modify and tweak things a bit, an ongoing process, btw, but it showed me the strength of those ideas. The more one sees something challenged, but that those ideas still hold up the more it shows that they are true, especially when alternatives that are proposed do not stand up to scrutiny. The more that scenario plays out over and over, year after year, the more confidence it gives on that the ideas are true.
