He has the poorly educated, religious, aggrieved, and deplorable population on total lockdown.

70% of the country will vote for anyone instead of Trump.

The problem is that 99% of that 30% of the population is going to show up to vote. About 25% of the 70% of the population who would vote for anyone else will show up and vote. America has to put forth someone that would compel a decent portion of the population to actually care enough to vote, or Russia wins.
