Macron sees a power vacuum in Europe right now with Germany increasingly running an austerity economy and a future without as much globalism (i.e. international trade which Germany relies on heavily). Britain is out with Brexit.
France could be the next leader of Europe and he sees that. The Ukraine problem is a Europe problem which could worsen with the fall of Ukraine. Macron knows that. So he took proactive meetings with Putin both before and after the invasion to try for a peaceful solution (nothing wrong with that). But Russia has only dug in their heels more so Macron has switched to a more aggressive footing, including illusions to French troops on the ground in Ukraine. That's just about as much reminding Putin how truly ****ing pathetic and weak the rest of the world now sees their once vaunted military prowess.
Troops in was dangled and went nowhere as there is no appetite for it in France. For now.
