We went to a grocery store some years ago and my wife had several items and a coupon for 10% off.
The young girl looked very confused and pulled out a calculator from under the cash register and looked at it and at the coupon for a while and then handed the calculator to my wife and asked her if she knew how to use it. It was pretty difficult to keep from laughing and embarrassing her.
One of my sisters has an orchard and a little store. They were having trouble hiring help after covid. Anyway, she said that one of her employees came up to her and confided in her that "X" probably shouldn't be working the cash register as she didn't understand change. My sister said that she didn't need to, the cash register would compute that for her. The employee told her, no, you don't understand, she doesn't understand what "change" is.
My sister couldn't believe it, but went up and talked to the girl. As they were talking she discovered that the girl had no concept of what a "quarter" was. This was a high school girl, about 17 or 18 years old. She had apparently never shopped by herself, or if she did only used her parent's credit card. She was clueless in the true sense of the word.
