My kids told me their (suburban Texas) high school was essentially two high schools. The AP Class group and the non AP Class group.

The AP classes were incredibly competitive, focused and disciplined. The non AP classes were none of the above. They took almost exclusively AP classes but when something wasn't offered in AP, they said an A could be earned with minimal effort and discipline in the class was lacking. Most of the kids were simply uninterested in learning.
