And if the US was reliant on conventional oil, that would hurt oil companies and consumers alike. But the sheer amount of oil coming from unconventional sources is impacting oil price to the point that the offshore leases (where most of the federal oil remains) really cannot compete and those projects are sliding to the bottom of most companies portfolios. The cost to drill and develop is enormous as is the lease to first oil time (several years)
Is it sound policy? No. Is it what the oil companies want? No, at least not the gulf of Mexico players. Is it having an impact on the current oil price? No.
