I'm kidding. I can't speak for Gyro or his beliefs on being gay. I think there is a big gap between being a homophobe that dislikes the lifestyle, so much so that voting and opinions of people are formed based on their sexual orientation, and tossing around a word as an insult.
And your second paragraph is mostly correct. I would change it to using the insult as humor more than using it out of anger. Only difference is sometimes my humor doesn't hit because I don't always know if someone will be offended by it or not. And when that happens, I do apologize as my intent is not to offend a gay person by using it as a slur. Typically (or ironically) the person offended by "gay" and "fag" being throw around is not gay themselves.
