it was in 1965. Clay first took notice of Roger while watching the Missouri High School Indoor Track Championship which, in those days, was conducted in old Brewer Field House. The athletics department offices were in the basement of Rothwell Gym, which was attached to Brewer and it was a short walk from the offices through the basement lockerrooms to the Brewer dirt track. Roger won numerous events for his King City HS team, which piqued Clay's interest. He talked to Roger and confirmed that he played football at King City, so Clay talked to the King City track coach and asked him to send some football film. The film was shot on an 8mm camera in the dim lighting of King City's tiny stadium, so it was barely viewable. Nonetheless, Clay thought it was "worth the gamble" to award Roger the last scholarship, based on his athleticism alone. And the rest is history.
