they ran on gasoline. Patton had to get past German defenses in Lorraine. It is rough country, not the same level low country typical of the North German Plain. Additionally, in relation to the position of 1st Army and the Brits, Patton's position on the front was far to the southwest of Berlin. I believe 9th Army was closer, as well.
