The Russians have always relied on massive numbers of troops, an acceptance that many of those troops must die in battle to achieve victory. They famously rely almost exclusively on orders from generals and allow little to no freestyling or initiative to occur, as needed in battle, from their NCO's.
So that's the Russian strategy. The only thing that has changed since WW2 is now they have massive issues with corruption from within their military so their equipment is subpar and they have equipment shortages.
