I wanted you to consider.
1. He did not tell them why they should buy a sword. He also didn't tell them why they needed money.
We could conclude two things:
a. Go fight and get ready to use money to survive
b. Don't know - perhaps something veiled
2. Answered below
3. He chastised Peter for using his sword
That would go against conclusion "a" above
It does not answer conclusion "b"
4. I wouldn't conclude that he wanted them to use violence, but If I did, that would contradict all of his teachings prior, plus, even Peter told suffering believers not to fight back against those who were trying to harm them - so, eventually, Peter got the point.
My conclusion: I don't know why he told them to buy swords. Taken in context of his other confusing statements "Watch out for yeast" "sell your possessions to enter heaven" - I can assume that he probably didn't literally want them to buy a sword in order to fight (because as the two examples above - one was a metaphor (yeast) the other was to illustrate that good works don't get you into heaven). It may have been a warning to be ready- **** is about to get real. In the end they weren't - they ran and fled, denied him, etc.
