A couple could eat dinner out at a decent place in 1980 for $25. A 15% tip would be $3.75.
Today, a nice evening out would cost $100. A 15% tip would be $15. Over the course of an evening 10 two tops today would yield $150 for a waiter. Back in 1980 about $37.50. If the waiter worked 5 hours, he'd be making $30 bucks an hour today and only $7.50 an hour in 1980. Inflation already accounts for the differential wages between 1980 and 2023; no reason to tip a higher percentage.
