I'm not criticizing Gates, I'm pointing out that the moderate success he had in year 1 wouldn't have happened without Kobe. Remember, the team won nearly *all* its close games (which is why our Kenpom 'luck' rating was off the charts). Without Kobe, all those close W's would have been losses, and we wouldn't even have reached the NIT.

Cuonzo had a good first season as well... The question is whether Gates can avoid the same kind of dropoff in year 2.
