nation state with groups with well established identities like the Croats, Serbs and Slovenes. You think that way about the Ukraine because it didn't really exist as a nation due to dominance by Russia. Poland had the same issues in its history, it was dominated by Germany or Russia during it's history and at times totally ceased to exist. It doesn't mean it's not a nation. The Ukraine became independent after the fall of the Soviet Union and while the borders may be negotiable, especially in trying to sort out who wants to be part of the Ukraine and Russia respectively, but you cannot just put the genie back in the bottle because it's now inconvenient.
