and bore people with their frivolous (and often incorrect) arguments.

The meaning of words change/evolve/broaden for various reasons.

I'm aware of the semantics/nuances of the phrase, but I prefer the broader meaning because it helps convey (very concisely) that you're talking about betting odds — and since the usage is widely accepted, I don't have to worry about confusing people.
