A good example, also related to horses: People repeatedly say that they are “CHOMPING at the bit.” Horses CHAMP at the bit and that is the correct use of the phrase - but the mistake is so common that it becomes part of the vernacular.

BTW congrats on your “almost in the SEC - so not really in the Big 12” team.
