I have read consistently that the number is more between 20-30% but I have not yet seen those numbers published by any institution that I'd trust enough to reference.
54% seems very high considering the waves of European and other immigrants since the late 1700's and the higher birth rates that accompanied catholic immigration.
I googled this and found 53% but that was an unreferenced source on Quora.
