losing coach and give him and staff an increase, it's very possible you have just shown other HC's and their staffs that you are willing to pay very good money to attract one of them, without having to make the promise during the early talks, but with nothing to back it up. Coaches get extensions that end up getting fired soon. Buyout money will be there.
