and your family paid whatever fees/taxes they levied. If they didn't pay them they would put liens on the home to have them along with any interest, and additional fees for not paying them on time taken from the sale proceeds if you ever sell it.

You would also be subject to their rules/bylaws if you visit there... any time you are within the HOA territorial boundaries.
