Israel apart from others in visible means. Circumcision, how they dressed, how they ate, how they sacrificed, how they celebrated festivals, etc. There was a clear distinction between Jew and Gentile based on how one observed the ceremonial law. In Christ, the line between Jew and Gentile was erased. The ceremonial law was no longer a necessary distinction. Only faith in Christ Jesus. However, the moral law remains constant.
And yes, rest is a command. But as Jesus pointed out, there is not a clear line for what that means. He would not have had a person allow a child or animal to die in a ditch because it was the Sabbath and someone could not "work." It is a proper sacrifice of heart and mind.
