NIL is AWESOME for what you call the 'marginal kids' because they'll get possibly the most money ever doing something they love.
They'll be entertainers for a time and get entertainers pay.
It's a vast improvement over the old slave system and you need to come to terms with how you benefitted from that system personally at the kids' expense.
