Players are going to improve regardless of coaching because of growing experience and maturity. A great coach can take a player with initial mediocre skills and coach him up to be a big contributor. In that sense, I think Geist improved beyond what most expectations were for him and Martin gets some credit.
On the other hand, I think Martin writes off some players early on that he probably should have stuck with.
