You answered your own question in my view. Basketball is king and I’m guessing a lot of the population grew up in small Ozark towns where basketball was king. May not have even had football at their school.
Aurora is an historical power though. It’s also one of the whitest towns of its size in America. So it isn’t producing a ton of D1 talent.
My favorite player from the burbs was Rusty Medaris. Dude had a motor for the Miami Hurricanes. Probably an NFL guy if he doesn’t tear up his knee.
