A little off topic but why does football suck in Springfield

Metro area. 350,000 and I can only think of a couple D1 players in the last 30 years. DGB, Steve warren who went to the nubs, Phil Johnson with Mizzou.
I know Webb city has had some but that’s an hour away.
Don’t get me wrong the basketball is king down here but I don’t get the lack of football.
