normal career path. People who are success assistants at major D1 programs are aspiring towards and taking the necessary steps to one day possibly become a D1 coach.
I agree Ryan was successful because he was a great coach. But if he would not have first taken a lower level D1 coaching job he would have never been given the opportunity to demonstrate it at a major D1 level. And that wouldn't be a mistake by an AD to pass on him, because he would be demonstrating a lack of drive and career ambition towards having such a career. But that is not what Ryan did.
