For a number of years there have been three powers in Afiganistan: The Karzai Government, the U.S. Military and the Taliban.
The assumption underlying our withdrawal was that the Karzai Government's forces had been trained and equiped to the point that if ad when the U.S. Military left, the Karzai Gorernment and its military would remain in power and control of much, if not all of the country.
That assumption has turned out to be false. The Afgan military has folded like a house of cards in the last few weeks and Taliban are in control of the country.
The U.S. miliary had a deadline to withdraw, but the Afgans who assisted it, who opposed the Taliban and the citizens of other naltions who did the same were never given a time table to leave the country.
