With the SEC becoming the undisputed elite superpower of college sports, dwarfing every other conference by comparison including the Big Ten, it presents some real & unique opportunities for Mizzou as the SEC's northern-most school and only midwestern state.
This was considered a possibility when Mizzou joined the league back in 2011, but now it could really come to fruition with the SEC moving WAY past the Big Ten in prestige & power, along with the Big 12 imploding.
Specifically, it would make Mizzou a more attractive option to recruits throughout the midwest, including regional Big Ten territories. Mizzou would be their closest option – both geographically & culturally – and the effects of that would be manifold. For example...
(1) It would help seal our borders (especially in STL) from Big Ten invaders like Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, etc.
(2) It would help us recruit Big Ten territories, especially those within driving distance.
(3) It would make it easier to recruit KC and Kansas, especially in basketball if KU is relegated to a non-power conference.
(4) Texas & Oklahoma would make the SEC a more potent & entertaining basketball league, which could only help our program.
(5) The financial windfall would help us with NIL (indirectly) by allowing boosters to fund NIL schemes instead of the AD. This is more important for MU than other SEC schools, since their AD's are already well-funded enough to free up donor/booster money for NIL. And of course, it helps us relative to the Big Ten which applies to (1) and (2) above.
(6) The fans who were lukewarm or bitter about us leaving the Big 12, or not going to the B1G, can finally rest-assured that Mizzou is in the best conference in the land... Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, LSU... it blows the Big Ten away in terms of matchups & excitement, in all sports – including basketball.
So while most fans have focused on how this could help our recruiting in Texas, the biggest impact could be in-state and regional recruiting, plus several other fringe benefits. With that said, the state of Texas would be completely owned by the SEC and TCU/Tech/Baylor would no longer be major players, so I think it would help us in TX as well.
Overall, everyone wins from this move – Texas, OU, and the entire SEC – but Mizzou could be the biggest winner of all (assuming the move actually happens, which isn't a guarantee yet).
