This from pickle's post expresses my thoughts much better than I would be able to...

No man can therefore have a "right" to compel someone to do a positive act, for in that case the compulsion violates the right of person or property of the individual being coerced."
Now, I think the moral obligation is huge. And I understand that horrible things will happen in a society that legally allows that to happen. But our society is already full of horrible things even when it is illegal. I don't agree with government using laws as a deterrent to crime. It doesn't work.
