at some point, but I think it is still valid here.

He's running around telling people what they shoudn't be doing and not only is he way off base in his reasoning all too often, but that isn't his job. He has that authoritarian mindset he accuses police of having.

So no, I do not think the metaphor/analogy was a mistake, your recommendation to the contrary notwithstanding.
