Truthfully, it has a place. On a sailboat, if you can pack on enough square footage of panels, you can run the lights and maybe charge up a laptop and run a small refrigerator. And that is only on a sunny day in good weather, with very efficient battery storage. You can be self-sufficent that way in those circumstances. But it cannot be used for propulsion or to do more demanding things like run an air conditioner at all or all the electronics 24/7.

So it has a place. It can help. But it can provide only a very small percentage of our overall energy needs.
