The same reason you resign at an employer, or at a club. To make clear you renounce all rights and privileges of being a part. You are not being forced out, and you are not being forcibly denied the privileges you had as a member. You have the right to do it. But you make clear you are giving up your voluntary association and all that it entails.
When I left former companies, I gave up my access, my parking spot, my gym membership, etc. Letting them know I was giving it up was all part of that to make clear I no longer wished to be a part.
This is the nature of voluntary associations.
