If Gonzaga has 4-5 bench players transfer because they realize they will never see the floor should not be viewed in the same light as a teams likely starters next year jumping ship (ie, Pinson, Smith and maybe Watson). So even though there are all these players in the portal you have to drill down on the following:
* are they leaving because they aren’t going to play where they are? Understandable
* are they are a lower level or lesser program and have performed well and think they can get on with a D1 or better D1 program? Understandable
* Are they leaving because they don’t mesh with the coaches or style of play? Understandable but could also be a red flag on the player (ie are they a malcontent or not)
* and finally, how many left their program even though they were a starter and would be a starter if they stayed but they want out because they don’t feel like they or program is going any where or developing them? Very concerning for the program
I don’t know the total number of players in the portal but I would be curious to know how many of them are in the last bucket....I bet that is a much smaller group of players.
Again, just my opinion but I do think it is important to understand why a player is transferring and just not look at the fact they are transferring
