If you wonder why mild mannered Joe is accused of killing Mary, knowing Mary had recently spurned Joe's advances and embarrassed him around his friends allows them to see he may have had motive to do it. Does not make the murder more or less wrong. Simply points to Joe as a person who may have had reasons to do it.
