than good...because being a person that possesses a potential similar motive makes you a criminal today.

I do think some people want to know why others did something, in hopes of future prevention of such crimes, or at least some understanding.

it certainly comes down to how punishment is applied in today's society, and probably would have some sort of applicability in a more free society (not sure exactly how though).
