and then transferred to Althoff, which was called Cathedral but was renamed when the Belleville Diocese built the new school. He was also kicked out of Althoff and would have had to go to ESL, so he moved in with his grandmother so he could go to Belleville high school. He moved to LA to live with Pancho Segura and graduated from a high school out there.
The family lived in East St. Louis because his Dad was a tollbooth operator on either the Eads Bridge or one of the other bridges that was owned by the city of ESL and as a city employee, his Dad had to live in ESL.
My high school, Vianney, was in the same league with Chaminade, Marquette, and Cathedral, later to be called Althoff. When I asked one of the Marianist brothers why Assumption wasn’t in the same league since the Marianists also taught there, he said that I wouldn’t want to have to play any sports against those kids; they were much tougher than us suburban wimps.
