The education is tougher, doesn't mean that each student will benefit from it. They get a heavier homework load so when they hit college, college is manageable and for some kids easier. Most are same sex so there is not the distraction during the day of the opposite sex. Their classes tend to be smaller than metropolitan public schools so they tend to know one another and network later in life. If you're are not wealthy your kid is exposed to kids who grow up that way and know what's out there if they wish to go after it. Last of all, there is a religious/morality component that you will not get at a public high school. Not to say a kid who goes thru public school can't get any of these things but your kid, IMO, has a higher opportunity at private. Also, my experience with public schools and private schools is that if your kid is an honors kid, the public school will put a lot of resources into your kid and they'll do fine. If your kid has disabilities or cognitive issues that have been identified, the public school will put resources into your kid. If you're in the middle, not so much. So what are your parameters of what makes a legitimate discussion? I don't know where you live so if you're out in mid state where there aren't any private school options then my next statement doesn't pertain to you. However if you're in the St. Louis area you should want private schools because the cost to educate your kid is partially subsidized by those who pay taxes into the school district but don't use those resources. That may be upended though as I thought I saw an article over at the Post Dispatch saying they may be allowing for school choice this morning. I will be happy to address any questions you may have.
