if by necessity. We are part of the godless animal kingdom; killing for territory, breeding rights, and scarce resources is simply nature at work. Sometimes a legit battle for the above-mentioned goes to far.
Killing for sport or out of cruelty is rare, and almost a uniquely human trait, with the exception of several cats species (although it could be argued this behavior is strictly for training purposes in cats). But, if humans do it without being taught, it should be considered natural behavior and should be met not with imprisonment or death, but with a good social worker.
