Many idiots with dumb, overpriced educations present an issue to be dealt with, one way or another. The idea that if we have fewer young people with a **** ton of student debt, we would be better off, is tough to argue.
However there's an argument of fairness involved. You make your decisions, you unfortunately have to live with them. And some people, including my wife, have postponed buying other things in order to pay off her student debt, which she recently did about 2 years ago. If you forgive others' student debt, how does it feel fair to someone like her?
More frustratingly, the root of the problem is seemingly NEVER discussed. Why the hell is college so expensive these days anyway? Forgiving all existing student debt today would cost a LOT of money and wouldn't permanently solve the problem, as students are still taking on loads of debt to pay astronomical tuition.
If we're going to throw money at the problem, shouldn't we at least have a permanent solution?
