So what is the Senate up to now if not impeachment?

The impeachment itself is really just the formal charging of wrongdoing. Pretty equivalent to a grand jury in the legal system.

What the Senate is doing now would be like having a trial for someone who passed away before their trial date. What is the purpose?

If he were found guilty the result would be removing him from an office he already left.
