The attention given to education is not that great..the demands put on them for being athletes continue to rise putting less time and focus on academics, especially in the revenue sports.
Of course the rest of the student body would love a free educaiton.
Now, compare the revenue split today vs 10 and 20 years ago. Despite the fact that education costs are increasing inflation, sports revenues are going up even faster, so the share to the athletes has gone down even further...and then they are restricted from making money outside of their sport.
Is it voluntary..yes it is, but it is also more or less a racket between NFL/NBA and the colleges...although the NBA is not competing a bit against colleges with the Developmental leagues...but they also promise to no longer draft high schoolers anymore.
